Is there a charge to apply?

There is no charge to apply, except for international (F-1 Visa) students, who pay $35.

What are the admissions requirements?

Southwest College has an open admissions policy. A high school diploma is not required.

Are transcripts from other colleges or high schools required?

No. The only time you would want to have copies of transcripts from other schools sent to Southwest is when you want Southwest to use a course from another school for graduation, certification, or course prerequisite requirements.

What degrees does Southwest offer?

Southwest offers two-year Associate degrees in the arts and sciences, Occupational Certificate programs and general education transfer programs.

What is the process to apply and register at Southwest?

Applications are accepted by mail and in person.

If you're planning to take Math or English courses, or if you wish to pursue a degree, you will be given an appointment to take English and math assessments and participate in anorientation to the college. You will then meet with a counselor to develop an individualized enrollment plan. Finally, you will register for classes either in person, online, or by telephone (STEP).

Exemptions from English and Math assessment are available to students taking courses for personal interest.

What is the cost?

California residents pay only $20 per unit. Non-resident fees for students from out of state are an additional $154 per unit. International students pay an additional $164 per unit.

Where do I get admission forms?

Admission forms and petitions are available in the Admissions Office, Student Service Building #125 or clickHEREto download form. You can alsoapply online.

How do I order my Southwest transcripts?

Copies of Unofficial Transcripts and grades can be obtained online. A transcript is an official record of all the courses you completed at Southwest College and the grades you received. It will also include any degrees you were awarded by Southwest, as well as honors such as placement on the Dean's list or membership in Alpha Gamma Sigma. If you are requesting your transcript to be sent to another school, keep in mind that most schools only consider the transcript "official" if they receive it in the original sealed envelope. Unfortunately, we cannot accept faxed transcript requests.

To request your transcript please include the following information:

  • Name
  • Any Former Names
  • Social Security Number or college assigned ID number
  • Date of birth
  • Approximate Dates of Attendance
  • Number of copies required
  • Where transcripts are to be sent
  • Your signature
  • Payment by personal check made out to "Los Angeles Southwest College"

You are entitled to two transcripts or verification of enrollment free of charge. After that the charge for transcripts is $3.00 each. It usually takes seven business days for your transcript to be sent. An emergency transcript service is available. With emergency service, your transcript is usually prepared within 1business day of the time the request is received. If you bring in your emergency request, you will receive your transcript on the spot. There is an extra $7.00 processing fee for emergency service, bringing the total charge for EACH emergency transcript to $10.00.

You may request that your transcript be mailed by the US Post Office Express Mail Service. Please include a prepaid and addressed mailing envelope with your request. We cannot honor requests for any private overnight or express mail service.
