General Information

 

Los Angeles Southwest College assures accessibility of programs and activities to students with disabilities. The college's mission is to provide support services, which contribute to student success. The Disabled Student Programs and Services office has been established to provide supportive services to students with physical, psychological, and learning disabilities. The program objective is to assist disabled students in meeting their educational and vocational needs.

 

Qualifying students may receive the following services: registration assistance, special counseling and program planning, note taking services, alternative testing, reader assistance, tutoring, instructional liaison, adaptive computerized equipment, specialized equipment. Other services are provided as needed.

 

The Disabled Student Programs and Services office is a liaison with the Department of Rehabilitation and other agencies.

 

What are special services at a community college?


The Disabled Students Program & Services (DSP&S) office provides special services which address the educational needs of the disabled college student. (i.e., Disabled students with a professionally verified HEALTH, LEARNING, AND/ or PHYSICAL LIMITATION.)


The staff of the DSP&S office is a liaison with the college’s Financial Aid and EOP&S (Extended Opportunity Program and Services) offices and with the State Department of Rehabilitation in order to assist students with obtaining available benefits.


All records, including medical information and referrals are kept confidential in accordance with state and federal law.

 

Who benefits from our special services?


Any adult in the community may benefit from our special services, simply by contacting the Disabled Student Program and Services (DSP&S) office.

 

Our full spectrum of services is available to new and continuing students who enroll in three (3) units of college credit, and who have one or more of the following limitations and/ or disabilities.

  • Hearing
  • Mobility/Orthopedic
  • Speech and Language
  • Visual
  • Physical Health
  • Learning

 

Verification of a primary disability is necessary to establish eligibility for DSP&S participation. Disabled students are persons with exceptional needs enrolled at a community college that, because of professionally-verified physical, communication or learning disability, cannot benefit from the regular education classes, activities and/ or services provided by the community college without specific and additional support services or programs.
