SPECIAL COURSES

LS 40 “Introduction to Learning Disabilities”

This course will explore the nature of learning disabilities and the laws, accommodations, and services available for academic improvement.  Students will be assessed to determine eligibility for the learning disabilities program in order to receive accommodations and services.  This course involves analysis and understanding of learning differences, the importance of the selection and application of effective learning strategies and the critical role of self-advocacy in persons with LD’s.

LS 41 “Study Strategies for Students with Learning Disabilities”

This course will help students with identified learning disabilities develop strategies appropriate for hi/her learning style to cope with the demands of the classroom environment.  Such strategies include time management, note-taking, reading comprehension, goal setting, test-taking, concentration and memory, organization, and writing.

ACADEMIC ACCOMODATIONS

As indicated by the student’s documented limitations, these compensations may be provided:

  •      Alternative for printed materials
    •     Taped textbooks
    •     Computerized voice synthesizer programs
    •     Access to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D)
  •       Alternative test-taking procedures
    •     Provision of extended time
    •     Distraction-reduced test area
    •     Computers for essay exams
  •      Alternative to notetaking
    •     Note-taking assistance for lecture notes
    •     Tape-recorded lectures
  •      Alternative to hand-writing essays, papers, and exams
    •   Use of word processors
    •   Voice-recognition computer programs
  •    Priority enrollment
All students enrolled in the LD Program will receive priority enrollment.  Students will have the opportunity to select and enroll in courses earlier than students without disabilities.  This is a great service that allows students to create course schedules that are conducive to their medical/disability-related circumstances.
