Student Success Activities

The Student Success Committee is divided into workgroups. There are several campus committees and the personnel on the various committees most often overlap. Campus personnel have been reluctant to volunteer to serve on yet another, so a more creative format was proposed. Groups of faculty, staff, and administrators would work in small groups on distinct projects. The groups would meet and carry out their assignments, all aimed at increasing retention and student success. There would only be a two to three projects undertaken per year. The goal is to maximize limited manpower, resources, and time by focusing on specific goals. Patrick Jefferson is the administration co-chair. A faculty co-chairs needs to be recruited.

The following are the three initiatives planned for the 2008-2009 school-year and the personnel involved in the efforts.

1. Institutionalizing the Anytime Student Assistance Program

Patrick Jefferson, Rose Calderon, Leonard Apenahier, Alex  Slabo, Ed Hector, Radames Resendiz, Celestine Tillman, Phillip Jones Thomas, Nikia  Billingslea,  Sabrena Turner-Odom, Guadalupe A Ramos

This activity was promoted in the spring 2008 and fall 2008 semesters to mixed results and participation. It was decided that a new strategy to gain faculty participation was needed and further promotion has been tabled.

2. Developing a Mandatory Orientation

Patrick Jefferson, Rose Calderon, Ron Haynes, Igor Daza

The group originally wanted to have a mandatory orientation in place for the spring 2009 semester, but is now planning for fall 2009.  Work is continuing on this effort.

3. Developing an Intrusive Counseling Pilot Program

Patrick Jefferson, Susan-Burton-Haynes, Sabrena Turner-Odom, Darren Cifarelli, Tamura Howard, Rose Calderon, Blanca Rodriguez, Michelle Williams, Tangelia Alfred

This activity is underway and counselors have been paired with teaching faculty and are making visits to classes.
