Hispanic Heritage Month
Los Angeles Southwest College celebrates
Hispanic Heritage Month
(September 15 - October 15)
Hispanic Heritage Month is the period to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15th and ending on October 15th. Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries ~ Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16th, Chile on September 18th and Belize on September 21st.
Los Angeles Southwest College will mark the occasion by presenting a series of events that will highlight the richness and depth of Latin American cultures. We truly look forward to your attendance at these events.
