What is tutoring?

The purpose of tutoring is to help students help themselves by assisting or guiding them to the point of becoming an independent learner.

What will tutors do?

Their job is to help a student identify patterns of errors and assist with revisions, critical thinking, writing, and other grammar and study skills. Tutors are happy to help students with questions, papers, and homework but they do not edit, proofread, or otherwise "check" student assignments.

Why do I need tutoring?

Everyone learns differently and while you may be strong in one area (Math, for example), you could have some trouble in another (English). That is where the tutor steps in.

What will I learn as a result of receiving tutoring?

A tutor's job is to help you understand the concepts you are studying in your class and help you develop stronger study skills.

What do I need to do if I need tutoring?

Appointments are encouraged for tutoring but the Learning Center gladly accepts walk-in students. If you would like to make an appointment, simply call the Academic Success Center at (323) 241-5455. Otherwise, feel free to stop by and pay us a visit on the 2nd floor of the Founder’s Library (Cox Building).

For every tutoring session, you will need a copy of your syllabus, your textbook, and a copy of the assignment you are working on. It is vital that you come to each session prepared as the tutors are not in your classes with you and have no knowledge of the assignments you must complete.
