The VELS CAFÉ is a student success strategy for international/English-as-a-Second Language students who need to improve their command of English before pursuing college level coursework in an academic or vocational program. It is also for ESL students who are seeking a pathway to the job market and need workforce entry skills. Students who are CAlWORKs, and students who are enrolled in the college’s credit and/or non-credit English-as-a-Second Language classes may use the VELS CAFÉ to enhance the instructional activities in their classes. Others may register in Learning Skills classes after diagnostic assessment. Students may also attend the workshops or seek tutorial assistance. Beginning and intermediate level students will acquire proficiency in speaking, reading, writing and listening. Areas of study include:

  • Articulation and pronunciation
  • Basic English conversation
  • American idioms
  • Vocabulary building, reading/listening comprehension, grammar usage, spelling sentence structure, composition, handwriting

  • Job readiness and skills preparation
