Learn the Language of Drawing to Bring Designs to Production

How do engineering designs take shape? The first step is having drafters turn them into blueprints so there are instructions on how to make them. This process is the language of technical drawing where different types of lines convey different meanings in how to build a design. Learn how to communicate with lines as your technical drawings bring engineering ideas and information into reality!

Using Computer-Aided Drawing (CAD) software, you’ll learn how to draw different points of view and in different dimensions to create an instructional blueprint on how to construct a design. This career can be challenging and exciting as you interpret ideas into lines and dimensions. And, you will continually be rewarded with seeing your work come to life.

Careers in Engineering Graphics

Those who study engineering graphics typically work in architectural and engineering firms with computers using CAD software to develop blueprints of engineering designs. And, with further engineering education, careers become more advanced, such as being a parametric design engineer or architectural product animator.

What You’ll Learn at LASC in Engineering Graphics 

LASC’s Engineering Graphics Skill Certificate program will allow you to complete your career goals in one semester as you develop the language of lines:

  • Use two-dimensional Computer-Aided Drawing (CAD) software to begin learning the language of technical line drawing to create blueprints. Learn about layers, line definitions, template building, how to create an object, and more.
  • Gain invaluable experience working with SolidWorks software so you can go from two- to three-dimensional designs. This program allows you to perform stress tests on your designs and easily make design changes and streamline your productivity efficiency so you can apply your skills to professional applications.
  • LASC provides internships so you can build your career connections and create ties in the community to use after you graduate.
  • To transfer into an Engineering program at a four-year college or university, visit the Transfer Center and your academic counselor to review your coursework and choose a university that best fits your needs. And, by taking Pre-Engineering and Engineering Graphics from LASC, you will save money on your first two years of college!

Engineering and Technology discipline offers an Engineering Graphics program leading to a skill set which includes instruction in both 2-D and 3-D Computer Aided Drafting software courses. 

The skill set can be achieved in one semester with the completion of 9 units. Students may take advantage of the value of this skill set by working in industry while continuing their education. Students are required to complete each listed course with a grade of “C” or better.

Get Ready Before You Start

Before your first class in starts at LASC, you can start preparing for your career in Engineering Graphics:

  • Make an appointment with your LASC academic counselor to review LASC’s program, begin your Student Education Plan (SEP), and discuss what additional support services and opportunities you can be a part of to succeed, including Math Lab and peer tutoring. And, talk with your counselor about what you will need to do to transfer to get a bachelor’s degree in Engineering so your transfer 
  • Still in high school? Take as many math, science, and computer science classes as you can. Make sure you have a good understanding of them, and, if needed, find tutoring to get tips and pointers in order to succeed.
  • Once you’re at LASC, make sure to get involved with on-campus clubs and organizations, such as Phi Theta Kappa and Toastmasters. Become a student ambassador, or run for student body government. Getting involved builds new relationships and show potential employers you are dedicated to being a leader and are eager to be a part of new experiences.
