Food Accessibility

It’s now easier than ever for eligible students to sign up and receive money every month to help buy groceries. CalFresh is a California financial aid program that helps students buy food and eat healthier. It won’t affect your existing financial aid and you don’t need your parent's tax return information to apply.

If you are concerned about a family in need of food or assistance, or you need resources yourself, call 211, contact your local non-profit Family Resource Center, or apply for public benefits, which may include health care, cash aid, and food and nutrition assistance, through your county’s Social Services or Health and Human Services department.

Health

Increased anxiety is absolutely normal right now. Here are some ways to receive support.
  • All of the providers and staff at LASC's Student Health Center operated by Mosaic Family Care are committed to supporting the health and mental health needs of all students. Students who need support from the center should contact the Mosaic Family Care office at (323) 226-9042. Students can also email info@mosaicfamily.care.
  • With new COVID-19 measures, it’s now easier than ever for eligible California community college students to sign up and receive FREE money every month from CalFresh to help buy groceries. The average eligible student receives $150 each month and it only takes a couple of minutes to apply. Call 1-877-847-3663 (FOOD) or click here to fill out an application.
  • If students have Medi-Cal and are in need of mental health services, they can call the number on their health plan membership card, or call their local county mental health line. For help finding what services are covered, call the Medi-Cal Managed Care and Mental Health Office of the Ombudsman at 888-452-8609 Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Students can visit StayEnrolled.com to get the latest information and updates related to financial aid, transfer, and career education. Current and prospective students will find specific resources and support services available.

Online Learning

Canvas is the learning management system LASC uses so you can log into and access your online courses. Make sure to log into Canvas for your online classes. If you need some support with canvas, we have plenty of options available for you.

Here is some helpful information and resources for online success!

1. Using Canvas

  • All fall 2020 classes are using a system called Canvas--the system you're logged into now! :)
  • This video gives a nice overview of how to navigate Canvas: Canvas Overview Video
  • Canvas makes some very helpful guides to help answer your questions: Canvas Guides for Students
  • Google Chrome is the best browser to use with Canvas. To download Google Chrome for free, go to: Google Chrome Website

2. Logging into Canvas

To your Canvas dashboard:

  • Go to https://mycollege.laccd.edu and log in with the same information you use to log into the SIS system where you add classes, see your schedule, etc. Then, click on “Canvas” on the right side of the screen.

 3. Resources for Online Success

  • Student Self-Orientation to Canvas: One of the great things about Canvas is that there are a lot of resources available to help you become familiar with how to use it! I recommend completing the Student Self-Orientation to Canvas. This self-orientation includes videos that take you through the different parts of Canvas. The Canvas Student Self-Orientation can be found at: Canvas Self Orientation

When you click on that link, you may be asked to re-log into Canvas to enroll in the self-orientation course.

  • LACCD Student Distance Learning Resources: Another great resource that is available to LASC students is the Quest for Online Success online workshop. This online workshop has lots of tips and resources for how to become a better online student. You can enroll in the Quest for Online Success workshop by going to: LACCD Student Distance Learning Resources

When you click on that link, you may be asked to re-log into Canvas to enroll in the Canvas site.

4. Canvas 24/7 Helpline

LASC students have 24/7 access to the Canvas helpline to ask any questions related to Canvas. The phone number is 1-844-303-5591, and their support team is very helpful! You can also access this phone number by clicking on "Help" on the bottom of the links on the left side of the screen (in the blue stripe). Once you click on that link, look for the number under "L.A. Southwest College Canvas Support." Add the phone number to your contacts now so you always have it!

5. A Note about Adding Online Classes

If you add an online class, you won't see it in Canvas until UP TO 24 HOURS AFTER Admissions processes the add. It can happen before that, so feel free to keep checking your Canvas Dashboard.

6. Free Online Tutoring!

You can also access free online tutoring through NetTutor in two ways:

  • Through Canvas: click on the "NetTutor" link in any Canvas shell
  • Click "Online Tutoring" once you've logged into https://mycollege.laccd.edu

Have a great semester!

President Dr. Seher Awan is inviting all students to a virtual town hall at 11 a.m. every Friday to receive updates and chat questions to her. For more information, visit here.
