Below is more information on featured artist Damon Casarez.
Damon Casarez’s exhibition My Name’s Not Damien explores memory, identity, and assimilation through staged photographs influenced by a documentary aesthetic. Rooted in his upbringing as a fourth-generation Mexican American in suburban Los Angeles County, Casarez reconstructs childhood memories that are humorous, humiliating, or haunting. Drawing on lived experience, family archives, and speculation, the work reflects on cultural loss, belonging, and identity fragmentation shaped by suburban migration. Mundane domestic objects—a tortilla mask, a garden hose, a folded flag—become charged symbols of memory. Blurring fact and fiction, Casarez invites viewers to consider how personal and collective histories are remembered, reshaped, and mythologized in the ongoing formation of identity.
