    President Awan Statement: Reflections on the Conviction of Derrick Chauvin

    Like so many of you, I am heartened and emotional to hear the guilty verdict on all charges in the Minneapolis trial of former Police Officer Derrick Chauvin in the death of George Floyd. While this decision will not make up for the decades if not centuries of inequitable treatment of the Black/African-American community, I hope that it will get us one step closer to a more just future, in which law enforcement treats all individuals with respect and human dignity, no matter the color of their skin.     The Los Angeles Community College (LACCD) Black Faculty & Staff Association (BFSA) has been awarding financial gifts to students participating in the Black Graduation Celebration sponsored by the African American Outreach Initiative and the Chancellor's Office for 7 years.     LASC's Behavioral and Social Sciences Department will host an ongoing Media Literacy Project to educate LASC students in methods to better access, analyze, evaluate, and create media. Its mission is to develop critical thinking in media consumers and engaged media justice advocates, teaching skills needed to interact fully in the 21st century media culture.
